Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Presto ("Presto," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Presto mobile app (the "App"). By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.
Presto is a nutrition scanner that helps you compare products at the shelf. We are built around a simple principle: we collect the minimum we need to run the App, we never sell your data, and we don't track you for advertising.
1. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Email address. We collect your email address to create your account and sign you in. You may sign in with a one-time code (OTP) sent to your email, or through Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, both of which return your email address to us. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email" feature, we receive a private Apple relay address instead of your personal email.
- Name. When you sign in with Apple or Google, we request and may receive your first and last name. We store this in our backend even if the App does not currently display it.
Information collected automatically
- Usage and analytics data. We use Mixpanel to understand how the App is used so we can improve it. This includes events such as screens viewed, features used, and actions taken, along with technical information such as device type, operating system version, app version, and similar diagnostic data. This data is tied to your account but is not used to advertise to you.
Camera
The App uses your device camera in two ways:
- Barcode scanning is performed entirely on your device. The camera reads the barcode number, and no image or video is transmitted off your device or stored by us.
- Label scanning (when you scan a nutrition label instead of a barcode) captures a single image of the label and sends it to our backend, which forwards it to Google's Gemini API solely to read the nutrition facts printed on the label. We do not store these images; the image is used only to extract the nutrition text and is then discarded.
We never access your camera except while you are actively scanning, and camera images are not used for any purpose other than reading the product or label in front of you.
Product lookups
When you scan a barcode, the App sends the barcode number (not a personal identifier) to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), an open product and nutrition database, to retrieve product information. If you search for a product by name, the search text you type is also sent to Open Food Facts to return matching products.
Information stored only on your device
Your goal and metric preferences and your scan history are stored locally on your device. We do not upload or store these on our servers. If you delete the App, this data is removed with it.
Payment information
Subscriptions are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat. We do not collect or store your payment card number, billing address, or other payment details. Apple handles billing entirely. We receive only your subscription status (for example, whether your subscription is active) so we can unlock paid features.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect your phone number, mailing address, ZIP code, city, GPS location, or contacts. We do not collect social-media profile data, and we do not use advertising or remarketing trackers.
2. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and secure your account and sign you in.
- Provide, operate, and maintain the App's core features.
- Send the transactional one-time login code to your email. We do not send marketing or promotional emails.
- Process and manage your subscription.
- Understand usage and improve the App's features and reliability.
- Detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, and abuse.
- Comply with legal obligations.
3. How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We share information only with the service providers below, who are contractually limited to using it to provide their service to us:
| Provider | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Authentication and backend storage | Email, name, account data |
| Mixpanel | Product analytics | Usage events, device/diagnostic data |
| Apple / RevenueCat | Subscription processing and management | Subscription status |
| Apple / Google | Sign-in | Email, name (returned to us at sign-in) |
| Open Food Facts | Retrieve product data from scanned barcodes or name searches | Barcode number; product search text |
| Google (Gemini API) | Read nutrition facts from scanned label images | Photo of the nutrition label (no personal identifiers) |
We may also disclose information if required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Presto, our users, or others.
4. Data retention
We retain your account information (email and name) for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your account information and associated analytics identifiers within 30 days, except where we are required to retain certain information to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes. Scanned label images are not retained at all. They are processed in real time and discarded.
5. Data security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls on our backend. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your privacy rights
California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the following rights regarding your personal information:
- Right to know the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you.
- Right to delete the personal information we hold about you, subject to legal exceptions.
- Right to correct inaccurate personal information.
- Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. We do not sell or share your personal information, including for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of.
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights.
The categories of personal information we collect, as defined by the CCPA, are:
| Category | Examples | Collected |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Email address, name | Yes |
| Internet or electronic activity | App usage and interaction data | Yes |
| Commercial information | Subscription status | Yes |
| Geolocation, biometric, audio/visual, professional, education data | — | No |
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at prestoscanapp@gmail.com. We will verify your request using the email associated with your account and respond within the timeframe required by law. You may use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf.
CalOPPA and "Do Not Track"
This policy is published in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA). Some browsers and devices offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Because there is no common industry standard for DNT, the App does not currently respond to DNT signals. We do not track you across third-party websites or apps for advertising purposes.
7. Children's privacy
The App is intended for adults and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at prestoscanapp@gmail.com and we will delete it.
8. International users
The App is currently offered to users in the United States. If you access the App from outside the United States, you do so on your own initiative, and your information will be processed in accordance with this policy.
9. Data sources and attribution
Presto displays nutrition and product information drawn from two open databases:
- Open Food Facts. Branded product data, queried live when you scan a barcode or search by name (see "Product lookups" above).
- OpenNutrition. Generic nutrition data, a copy of which is bundled with the App and read on your device.
Both databases are made available under the Open Database License (ODbL), with their individual contents under the Database Contents License (DbCL). Presto's use of this data does not imply endorsement by either project. The bundled OpenNutrition data is a derived database under ODbL; we will provide that derived database under the same license on request at prestoscanapp@gmail.com.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. If we make material changes, we will provide notice within the App or by other appropriate means. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
